At the heart of Licking Springs Country Club lies a course crafted by one of Ohio’s most influential golf course architects — Jack Kidwell. Known for designing more than 100 courses across the Midwest, Kidwell was celebrated for layouts that flowed naturally with the land, rewarded smart play, and were accessible to golfers of all skill levels. At Licking Springs, he brought that same design philosophy to life with a course that is as inviting as it is enduring.

Originally opened in 1963, the course at Licking Springs reflects Kidwell’s core belief: golf should be challenging without being punishing, and enjoyable every time you play it. His designs never relied on gimmicks or forced layouts. Instead, he let the terrain do the talking—and our gently rolling hills, tree-lined fairways, and naturally framed greens still speak volumes today.

Our History: Honoring the Past, Building the Future

From Moundbuilders to Licking Springs – A Legacy Reimagined

For over a century, Moundbuilders Country Club stood as a cornerstone of golf and social life in Newark, Ohio. Established in 1910, it was not only known for its scenic course and vibrant community, but also for its unique location atop the world-renowned Newark Earthworks—sacred Native American mounds that long predated the club itself. In 2023, in partnership with the Ohio History Connection and in recognition of the site’s cultural and historical significance, Moundbuilders Country Club respectfully concluded its tenure on that land.

This transition marked a new chapter—one that balances preservation with progress.

The Next Chapter: Licking Springs Country Club

In 2024, the club’s legacy was reborn at a new home: Licking Springs Golf Course, a picturesque property just minutes away, featuring rolling hills, mature trees, and a course layout that reflects both tradition and playability. With this move came a new name—Licking Springs Country Club—and a renewed commitment to delivering the same high standards of service, camaraderie, and experience that members cherished for decades at Moundbuilders.

What began as a change in location quickly evolved into an opportunity: to modernize, reimagine, and grow. The club now features enhanced amenities, private event spaces, on-site villa lodging, and a reinvigorated focus on lifestyle programming, golf, and family-friendly fun.

Our Roots with The Trout Club

The story wouldn’t be complete without acknowledging our close neighbor and past partner: The Trout Club. Located just across the way, The Trout Club and Moundbuilders shared a period of transition, growth, and regional pride. While each property offers its own distinct atmosphere and experiences, our shared history has helped shape a vibrant and growing golf and social community in Licking County.
